The Book of the Cat and Billy

A while ago I was asked if a drawing I had done of my cat could be included in “The Book of the Cat”.

It was going to be by Angus Hyland and Caroline Roberts; seeking quirky art and illustrations of cats. I was so flattered to be involved in it and even more so when I saw the finished book. It has lots of famous artists including David Hockney and Andy Warhol!

Billy the cat has a great quote next to him;

“There is no need for a piece of sculpture in a home that has a cat” -Wesley Bates

And nothing could be more true for him. He is big in stature and personality, but he also lies under radiators and in doorways; an unmovable lump!

I really love the black and white illustrations.

And the beautiful paintings too.

He had a good read through.

After the book had been published I got an email from a man in San Francisco wanting to buy the drawing for his girlfriend; she had said to a friend if she had that hanging somewhere in the house it’d made her laugh every time she looked at it.

It seemed the perfect home for it. Billy makes me laugh so much with his ways and has brings me so much joy. I was glad my drawing did him justice enough for someone so far away to see it too!

Since then I have made more screen prints based on him, so his funny face and ways are in more homes now! And I have a diva on my hands…

New Drawings

I have been trying to stretch myself a bit with my drawing lately, so I have been looking at buildings and landscapes. These drawings are me figuring out how to describe these with just black ballpoint pen and ink; with a view to screen print them.  So no grey scale, just dashes!

Another back of my mind niggle is to try and bridge the gap between my paintings and screen prints-(which are very different much to my worrying), so I am hoping these will pacify that little voice.

Anyway I am working on one which I feel really happy with, so I will share that when I have finished. In the meantime these are the steps towards getting to grips with angles, perspective and shading!

Open Studios..previews

In a weeks’ time Hebden Bridge Open Studios will begin. This is when the public get to see all those creative spaces and the beautiful work that is made in them.

I will be opening my studio along with the super talented Hannah Nunn.

To celebrate and to give a sneaky peak of what will be in my studio I am going to feature a piece of artwork each day on my blog.

So without further ado, first up are lots of handprinted cards…

I have been thinking about the colour palette of each of these cards; I wanted them to have their own identity in their ranges but still have some running thread.I have already made prints to sit along side the Kingfishers and I am particularly excited about making the hummingbirds into prints. I used metallic green ink for these-it made me very happy to see how it shined against the matt grey recycled card (it is the small things)!

Hold on to your seats for the next instalment…

Lovely Kingfishers

I still have an obsession with drawing Kingfishers. I love their shapes and colours. I decided to make a new print range using blues like before but also hotter colours like yellows and oranges, to echo their plumage.Being able to use colour like this is what always draws me back to screen printing. It is a real chance to develop my pen drawings. I hope you like them…

They are in my shop too!

New Greetings Cards

I have been busy drawing and printing new card designs. The jade green colour on some of the birds is metallic and printed so well! I generally mix my own colours so it was an absolute treat to buy some pre-mixed! I spent a stupidly long time choosing them in the  Fred Aldous art shop, whilst trying to avert my eyes from all the other lovely things.

They are in my shop now and I am hoping they bring some summery colour your way.

Kingfisher cards

Lately I have been drawing lots and trying to get a range of cards together that I am happy with. This seems to take me a while; first I have to be happy with the drawing, then I have to hope my screenprint of said drawing works and then I have to be happy with the finished result, including choice of colour, paper etc….you get the picture.

And so here are my new Kingfisher cards (that I am actually pleased with)…phew, it feels nice to say that.

I start with drawing in biro…
